My Biggest Fan
Today I went in for the first time to help out with arts and crafts at Nico´s school. I love seeing Nico in his classroom environment and hope to continue to help out once every week or two.
Our task was to make lady bugs and Nico´s teacher purposely assigned me to help at a different table than the one where Nico was sitting. Without my pint-sized translator at my side, the going wasn´t always easy and God only knows what nonsense I spouted in Spanish to those kids. Communicating instructions to children is never easy but when those children are more eloquent than you are, despite being 30 years your junior, it can be downright humbling. With three-year olds, it´s usually fairly easy to hide the fact that you don´t understand half of what they´re saying but after a while, they do catch on. Soon enough, my little group intuited that something wasn´t quite right with me and treated me accordingly; like an aunt who´d been repeatedly dropped on her head as a baby.
Nevertheless, things went smoothly except for the fact that Nico was continually screaming at me from the other side of the room. “I LOVE you Mommy!! I love you so MUCH Mommy!” while at the same time, blowing dozens of kisses. The other kids looked at me sceptically and it was plain that they didn´t understand what all the fuss was about. It was as though Britney Spears were plopped down and forced to make lady bugs with a bunch of preschoolers who had no clue who she was while at the same time, the president of her fan club was tied to a chair over on the other side of the room, trying frantically to get her attention.
fantastic! I love it.
What a great story! I don’t know how you didn’t keep from cracking up through the whole event.
