Vintage Japanese Knitting
I was incredibly excited to come across some fabulous Japanese knitting magazines from the 1930s!!! There’s actually some really cute patterns in these mags, many of them quite unique in both appearance and construction. For example, instead of being knit top to bottom or bottom to top, many of the sweaters are knit from one side to the other. I got the wonderful Minato-san from the Rowan Store in Ebisu to agree to translate a few of them for me and she’s already finished one. The difficult thing about these old patterns though is that they’re knit with such a tiny gauge that I’m not sure I have the patience to actually finish one. I started knitting the one just below and it took me more than a day to knit only a few inches!

I really love this one here- you can’t see it very well but it’s actually knit so that the little scarf thingies cross each other and then tuck into the opposite side.

wow, lots of great adaptable designs! or just fun things to look at
either way, a great find.
Ooh, I like the one with the striped sleeves… The sweater you’re making is very cute.
What a find! They are amazing!
really inspiring, thanks for sharing them!
The patterns are great, but the images are especially beautiful too!
WOW, those are really interesting and inspiring patterns. They probably have a wonereful hand knit in this small gauge – but I would have a hard time with that as well. Thanks for sharing!
